Pinging from the wrong octane gas, would only be heard under engine load, such as fast acceleration especially on a hill. The way I understand your noise, it can appear in neutral, just from revving.
That is not preignition or pinging from poor gas.

I only use plus on the highway (for better mileage). I use regular all the time around town and never once had trouble with pinging!
